When I first read The Scarlet Pimpernel, I was in ninth grade. I had grown up reading a wide array of books, but I had avoided classical literature up to that point (thank goodness) and I didn’t think I liked books that were considered classics.
Scarlet Pimpernel is what changed my mind, and thus I am an English major and actually read classical literature for fun.
I went and saw the musical last Friday, and I was pleasantly rewarded with a hilarious, romantic, and beautiful performance. The costumes were amazing (go Clarissa, my sister, who was in part in charge of that), it was very funny, and I actually found myself enjoying it.
Now, I always thought I didn’t like musicals that much. Then Clarissa stated to blare them out of her bedroom that is next to mine, and I guess somewhere I started to like the music.
Scarlet Pimpernel, the book, changed my mind about classics. And I think Scarlet Pimpernel, the musical, changed my mind about musicals.
