Family Life

Vacation, First day

I am in Ouray, Colorado with my mom. We’re on vacation.

What is vacation? I had forgotten. I went camping earlier this summer with my family, but besides that short trip, I’ve been too busy to go camping. But since school ended and I don’t have a job yet, I had free time. Off we went.

We drove from Utah to Colorado today, which is not a very long drive. We saw some Tibetan monks making a sand mandela on the way here, and then when we got here and checked into our hotel, we immediately went off for adventure.

My family is very large, so I have never been on vacation without five to eight people along with me. This time, it’s just me and mom. We can do what we want. We can get lost on the side of a hill. We can wander. We can go do more things.

So we started by walking to a waterfall (Box Canyon Falls). This waterfall is hard and loud. A sizable stream is bottlenecked through a small rock opening, and the water comes roaring and crashing down onto smooth, gray rock. Wow. Then we walked/hiked, over a bridge, through a cave, around, etc. Saw some chipmunks. Then to another waterfall. Then we got lost on the side of a steep hill that was covered in scrub oak, and we lost all dignity as we crawled and stumbled through the dirt. We ended up coming out of the forest in someone’s driveway. So much fun.

It was raining for a good part of the afternoon. I got quite soggy on the edges, but the rain was beautiful and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It was pleasantly cool and refreshing, and looking out at a waterfall while it is raining is such a gorgeous experience.

I don’t have a to-do list today. I feel happy. I’m in my hotel room and really old music is being played on a speaker. I like the music, so my mom called me old. Oh well. I like being old-fashioned.
