A metaphor

Pretend that life is a giant field. Perhaps there are different paths going throughout the field, with different destinations.

You are walking on a path, going towards something, when all of a sudden, a wall comes up.

What do you do?

Let’s explore our options:

Maybe you weren’t very set on that path anyway, so you just turn around and go somewhere else.

You could just run into the wall. Repeatedly, with the hope that eventually it will just go away.

You could try to climb the wall.

Maybe you stop and pick the flowers.

Maybe you just stand there for a long time, looking at the wall and thinking.

You could get really angry, and start throwing a temper tantrum. Or you end up sitting and crying.

Maybe you have to go back and get a vantage point to assess the situation.

Maybe you close your eyes, and keep walking forward as if the wall didn’t exist, and find out that it isn’t a problem.

You could slowly deconstruct the wall.

You could make it into a game, or laugh at it.

Or, maybe you simply walk around it.

There are lots of different reactions to the walls that come up in our lives. Some are effective, some are not.  But we all have walls, and life really is about what we do when we face them.

  1. For some reason this all reminds me of playing “going on a bear hunt.” In the game you always find a way around the obstacle only to be chased by a bear. But, in the end everyone ends up safe and well.

  2. “Maybe you close your eyes, and keep walking forward as if the wall didn’t exist, and find out that it isn’t a problem.” I like this because many times are problems really aren’t problems, or they work out without any effort from us.
